Nashville City Council approves budget; including a 3 percent raise for city employees

In their final scheduled meeting of 2020 Monday night, the Nashville City Council adopted next year’s budget. The guidelines for next year include just under eight million dollars in revenue, with total expenditures amounting to 7.85 million dollars. On the revenue side, most of the income is attributed to general sources. The Street department anticipates revenue for next year of more than $532,000 dollars, while the sanitation revenues are projected to be $265,000 dollars. The budget includes a 3 percent pay raise for city employees.
Monday’s council meeting also the taxing rates set for the 2021 collections. No changes were made in the rate structure from this year. Nashville’s millage rates will continue at 2.6 mills each, for Real Estate and Personal Property.
Police Chief Amy Marion also presented a policy addition for her department. Regarding the use of force, the policy pertaining to choke holds & neck restraints is prohibited by officers. The additional language of “unless deadly force is justified”, was added to the policy. Chief Marion said the additional wording is being recommended for departments throughout the country, following the death of George Floyd, while in police custody this year in Minnesota. All 7 council members present voted for the policy addition.
