NASHVILLE CITY COUNCIL REVIEWS FINANCES, HEARS FROM SWA PAWS REPRESENTATIVES

The Nashville City Council held their regular monthly meeting yesterday, covering a wide range of topics from city finances to community initiatives.

Finance Director Kimberly Green reported on the city’s August financials, stating that total revenue came in at just over $844,000, while expenditures totaled about $770,000. That left a surplus of more than $74,000 for the month.

Green also noted a mixed performance in sales tax figures — with city sales tax revenue down 2 percent compared to August 2024, a decrease of $2,870 — while county sales tax revenue increased by 16 percent, bringing in over $12,400 more than the same time last year.

The Council also heard from Dr. John Hearnsberger, who spoke on behalf of SWA Paws, a local animal welfare organization.

Dr. Hearnsberger explained the mission and motivation behind forming SWA Paws, emphasizing the group’s commitment to addressing local animal welfare needs.

He also discussed the group’s proposed policy changes and outlined future plans.

Following that, Jenna Millwood Pope presented data on pet adoptions since the organization was launched, highlighting the positive impact SWA Paws has had in the community.

In other updates, Mayor Larry Dunaway briefed the Council on progress within the Waterworks Department. He stated that the department’s ongoing project will be going out for bids soon and noted that some additional paperwork is still in process.
