Nashville Council Not Implementing Mask Requirement

Nashville aldermen have decided to take no action on an ordinance furnished by the governor that allows city governments to require the wearing of masks when out in public as a means of reducing the amount of COVID-19 cases.

Police Chief Amy Marion said her concerns were that the department would be bombarded with calls about people not wearing their masks and the ordinance provides no penalty making it nearly impossible to enforce.

Even though the council failed to take action on the ordinance, mayor Billy Ray Jones continues urging local residents to wear the masks when out in public.

The general consensus among council members in Nashville is that the virus hasn’t reached the point of an outbreak and they reserved the right to enact the ordinance in the future should conditions warrant.
