Nashville Parks and Recreation Commission Discusses Donations, Sports Draft Changes, and Upcoming Projects at January Meeting
The Nashville Parks and Recreation Commission held their regular monthly meeting on January 21, 2025, where several key topics were discussed, including donations, facility updates, and plans for upcoming sports seasons.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the announcement that the park had received $1,885 in donations in memory of Bobby Keaster. These donations will be allocated to park activities, with the exact usage to be determined at a later date.
Park’s Director Meghan Floyd also reported that the roof on the old softball concession stand has been completed, improving the facility’s infrastructure.
Regarding sports, Floyd provided an update on Baseball 2025 registration, which is currently open and will run until February 3rd.
In a discussion about the sports draft process, the board decided to implement a “core 2” system for baseball this year, which was agreed upon after discussions with other local recreation programs. This new system, which eliminates “core players” from the draft, aims to create more balanced teams and fairer competition. The board also voted unanimously to apply the “core 2” system across all sports, including soccer, basketball, and flag football, with the motion passing 5-0.
Commissioner Freddie Horne announced he would be moving to emeritus status in March 2025. The board discussed nominating a new candidate to fill his position, with plans to introduce the nominee at the February meeting and swear them in before the March meeting.
Additionally, the commission discussed ongoing projects, including a bid for a cover over the baseball batting cages to protect the new nets from weather damage. They also discussed plans to meet with potential businesses about funding for turf fields, which would improve sports facilities in the area.
The meeting concluded with the commission reviewing the 2025 meeting dates and continuing plans for future developments in the park system.
