Pike County Quorum Court Delays Memorial Sign Decision, Hears Proposal for Weather Camera Network

The Pike County Quorum Court addressed plans for a memorial highway sign and heard a proposal aimed at improving severe weather awareness during their recent regular monthly meeting.
County Judge Eddie Howard introduced a resolution that would authorize the county judge to seek a Highway 27 roadside sign permit to honor Pike County veterans and first responders. During public comment, Rhonda Eleazar of Glenwood expressed support for both groups but suggested they be recognized separately or that funds for signage be directed to each group individually for greater impact.
Judge Howard explained that the signage effort originated with Mr. Graves and the historical society, and that county approval was needed to meet Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) requirements. Justice Johnny Plyler initially made a motion to introduce and adopt Resolution 2026-2, which was seconded by Justice Richard Mohlenhoff.
Before a vote was taken, Justice Kip Holbrook raised concerns about the wording of the proposed sign, calling it too lengthy and suggesting the possibility of splitting the recognition into two separate dedications through ARDOT. Following the discussion, both Plyler and Mohlenhoff withdrew their motions. Judge Howard said he will consult further with ARDOT and representatives from the historical society regarding the revised proposal.
In other business, Noah McGalliard of Southwest Arkansas Weather presented a proposal for a new weather camera network through Hazcams. The project would aim to improve public safety and awareness during severe weather events by providing live camera coverage across the county, with a long-term goal of achieving four-corner coverage.
McGalliard said each camera site would cost approximately $7,500, with installation costs varying by location, along with a $100 monthly fee for a streaming package. The system would require access to electricity and internet service at each location, and footage would be available to the public through the Hazcams website. No action was taken on the proposal.
