Pike County Quorum Court Meeting
Monday night’s regular Pike County Quorum Court meeting featured a lengthy discussion regarding feral hogs. Ricky Chastain, a biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, presented information about the recently awarded 3.4 million dollars in Arkansas for select counties. Chastain said there is a pilot trapping program in operation at Miller County. Terrell Davis of the extension service in Murfeesboro said he also has access to the trap.
Justice of the Peace John Terrell said he has been researching the feral hog issue. He stated the county could purchase a couple of traps for approximately 17 thousand 500 dollars and contract labor at a cost of 40 thousand dollars per year with the landowner being responsible for baiting the traps. During the discussion, Terrell made a motion to purchase one trap and set aside 25 thousand dollars for contract labor. The motion received a second. However, due to many questions and concerns other j.p.’s had regarding the funding and who would oversee the program, Terrell withdrew his motion and the topic was tabled until the court’s next meeting.
In other business, the Pike County Quorum Court authorized Sheriff Travis Hill to sell an unused 2009 Dodge Charger patrol car to the Kirby School at a price of one thousand dollars.
County Judge Dewight Mack also read a complaint filed by a resident living on the Old Factory Site Road, The citizen said they had driven across fresh oil and got it on their vehicle. The complaint said it cost nearly 700 dollars to clean the vehicle and was asking the county to pay for the cleaning. J.p.’s mutually agreed that it was a road hazard and no reimbursement would be granted.
