Quorum Court Told Howard County Fair Has Been Canceled

Howard County Extension Staff Chair Jean Ince told the quorum court Monday morning the local fair board has decided to cancel this year’s Howard County Fair. The livestock show will continue, according to Ince. She also reported on activities conducted by the county’s extension office related to COVID-19 in the past month.

J.p.’s also received the monthly financial report yesterday from Treasurer Sher Mixon. She indicated the sales and use tax revenues had dropped from May to June.

Compared to the previous month, the county road, sanitation, jail and UA Cossatot accounts each received 14-15 thousand dollars less in sales tax money. The county general budget was down about seven thousand dollars in sales tax revenues while the Howard Memorial Hospital account saw the largest drop of nearly 58 thousand dollars in June.

The county has received its payment in lieu of taxes money this year. The funds are monies paid for government owned properties, such as lakes or forest land, that prohibit the county from collecting property taxes. Mixon said the amount received in Howard County this year was over 43 thousand 200 dollars. Approximately 95 hundred dollars of the funds were returned to North Howard Community Council.
