Regional Leaders, Industry Representatives Discuss Housing Challenges Impacting Workforce Growth

Business owners and industry representatives from Howard, Sevier, Little River and surrounding counties gathered Tuesday for a roundtable discussion focused on one of Southwest Arkansas’ most pressing issues — housing.
The meeting brought together local leaders, including Nashville Mayor Larry Dunaway, UA Cossatot Chancellor Dr. Steve Cole, Howard County Economic Development Director Vanessa Weeks and Dana Poindexter, regional manager for Southwest Arkansas with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC).
Poindexter opened the discussion by addressing some of the challenges communities face when it comes to housing availability and development.
Following her remarks, Poindexter invited industry representatives to share their experiences and discuss how housing shortages have affected workforce recruitment and retention efforts throughout the region.
Among those participating in the discussion were Tammy Waters of Domtar in Little River County, Quinn Smith of Bailey’s Discount Building Supply in Sevier County, and Katie Hooker and Shaun Clark of Weyerhaeuser in Howard County. Participants offered perspectives from both the employer and employee viewpoints, describing how limited housing options can create obstacles for attracting and retaining workers.
Dr. Cole noted that housing concerns are being felt across communities throughout the region and that many employers are facing similar challenges.
Cole also discussed the issue from the perspective of higher education, explaining how housing availability can impact the college’s ability to support students needs and regional growth.
As the meeting concluded, Poindexter emphasized the importance of continuing the conversation and said plans are already underway for a follow-up meeting.
The roundtable served as an opportunity for business leaders, educators and public officials to exchange ideas and identify potential solutions to a housing shortage many believe is affecting economic development and workforce expansion throughout the region.
