Scammers Target Arkansans with Forged Tax Notice Letter

Arkansas officials are warning consumers about scam letters circulating across the state that are designed to look like official government tax notices.

According to reports, Arkansans have received fraudulent letters claiming they owe back taxes and could face serious consequences such as tax liens, wage garnishments, or other penalties if immediate action is not taken. The letters often pressure recipients into paying large upfront fees for supposed tax-relief services and may falsely claim to represent or work directly with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Authorities say the scam letters are intentionally crafted to create fear and urgency. Some direct consumers to call private companies that claim they can resolve tax problems. In many cases, callers are urged to remain on the line while representatives pretend to “contact the IRS” in an attempt to collect sensitive personal, banking, or financial information.

Consumers who receive one of these letters are urged not to call the number listed in the notice and not to provide personal or financial information to unknown individuals or companies. Officials also warn consumers not to make any payments before independently verifying the legitimacy of the company involved.

Anyone concerned about their tax status should contact official government agencies directly.

Consumers can verify federal tax information with the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or contact the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration at 501-682-5000. Residents are also encouraged to check with their local county office regarding any legitimate tax liens and request an official IRS transcript if needed.

Officials further advise consumers who may have already made a payment or shared financial information to immediately contact their bank or credit card company to protect their accounts and report potential fraud.
