South Pike County School Board Reviews Enrollment, Projects and Financial Matters

The South Pike County School Board met last Thursday for its regular monthly meeting, receiving updates on enrollment, academics and campus projects while approving several financial and personnel matters.

Following the meeting, KMTB and KNAS spoke with Superintendent Tanya Wilcher yesterday about the district’s progress heading into the new school year.

Wilcher reported that three students have transferred into the district, while two students have transferred out.

At Murfreesboro High School, enrollment has increased from 293 students last year to 301 this year.

Wilcher said enrollment has also increased at Murfreesboro Elementary School, from 340 students last year to 368 this year. The school has 62 new kindergarten students.

K-3 screeners are scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 1, followed by RTI.

Wilcher also discussed projects that have been completed throughout the district, as well as projects currently underway.

Board members also approved property bids of $3,024 for the Brocktown land and $7,575 for the Bowen land. The board additionally authorized Wilcher to make offers of up to $110,000 on adjacent properties that are currently for sale.

With the school year now underway, Wilcher also talked about what she is most excited about as the district moves forward.

The board also changed the date of its September meeting. The meeting was moved from Sept. 15 to Sept. 24 to allow additional time to prepare the new budget, which opens Sept. 15.
