South Pike County Schools Vote To Close Delight Elementary

During a special called meeting of the South Pike County School District Tuesday night, board members passed a motion to close the Delight Elementary School at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

During the regular April meeting of the board, the decision to close the Delight campus was tabled until a special called meeting could be held. Superintendent Brad Sullivan had recommended closing the campus in May during that meeting two weeks ago.

Board members heard from about 14 district patrons from Delight and Murfreesboro who voiced their opinions concerning the closing of the Delight Elementary campus. Parents from Delight stated the campus received an ’A‘ rating from the state and was considered a high performing school.

One Murfreesboro patron reminded those in attendance and those watching the meeting on the internet that the original plan when the Delight and the Murfreesboro schools annexed to form the South Pike County School District included closing the Delight Elementary if attendance ever dropped below 100 students. The campus had 81 students this school year.

Following a lengthy discussion, board president, Steve Conley made a motion to close the Delight campus following the 2020-2021 school year. The motion passed by a 4-3 vote.
