Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week Encourages Residents to Make a Plan

As part of Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week, the National Weather Service Shreveport is urging residents to “Make a Plan” before storms threaten the area.

Emergency officials say preparation is one of the most important steps families can take ahead of severe weather season. Knowing what to do before a warning is issued can save valuable time and potentially lives.

Residents are encouraged to identify the safest location in their home, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows and exterior walls. Those who live in mobile or manufactured homes should determine in advance where they will go if severe weather is expected, such as a community shelter or a sturdy building nearby.

In addition to identifying a safe shelter, families should establish a communication plan. This includes deciding how family members will contact one another if separated and ensuring children understand where to go and what to do during a storm.

Officials also recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio, local media, and mobile alerts. Preparing an emergency kit with essentials such as flashlights, batteries, water, medications, and important documents is another key step.

Severe weather can develop quickly during the spring months. By making a plan ahead of time, residents can respond quickly and confidently when storms approach.
