Stop for Flashing Red Lights on school buses

Wednesday morning, Nashville School District Transportation Director Bunch Nichols stopped by the KMTB studio to discuss a disturbing trend that bus drivers are observing while picking up students before school and while delivering students to their homes after school. Nichols said drivers are reporting cars passing school buses that have their flashing red lights on. He said there have been several of these incidents over the past couple weeks.

Nichols said districts throughout the state are experiencing an increasing number of drivers who are ignoring the stop signs and red lights on school buses.

Nichols stated each bus is equipped with seven cameras, inside and outside of the bus. So if you pass a bus that has its red lights on, you should smile for the camera.

According to Arkansas law, it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing, when children are getting on or off the bus. The minimum amount of the penalty for passing a stopped school bus is $500. The maximum penalty is $2,500.
