submitted by PJ Tracy of the Murfreesboro Diamond newspaper

With a deadline of noon on August 10, the Vote Pike County Wet imitative is closing in on the required number of signatures to have the issue placed on the November ballot.

The group currently has more than 1,500 petitions and must collect around 700 more in the time remaining.

To officially allow the issue to be placed on the ballot for Pike County voters to approve or disapprove, the Vote Pike County Wet committee needs to collect the signatures of 38 percent of the registered voters in Pike County, which is a total of 2,195 signatures. The group currently has the signatures of about 26 percent of the registered voters. The committee has collected signatures from 523 people in Murfreesboro, 317 in Glenwood, 94 in Kirby, 105 in Delight with the remaining signatures from residents in rural parts of the county.

Jamie Terrell is one of the committee’s organizers and he stated the effort was simply to build tourism in Pike County.

Committee member Jack Bond said, if you’ve ever wanted to help Pike County grow, there is simply no easier way than filling out a petition. He said if you don’t sign a petition and the issue falls one signature short, you can’t complain about the future of Pike County.

For more information, join the Vote Pike County Wet committee this Saturday at the Cash Savers parking lot in Murfreesboro from 11 am to 4 pm or the Wright’s Food Center parking lot in Glenwood. Everyone is welcome to stop by and enjoy hotdogs, sodas and watermelon, even if you don’t sign the petition.
