Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week Set for March 1–7

March 1 through March 7 has been designated as Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week, a time to encourage residents across the Four-State Region to prepare for the peak of the spring severe weather season.

In 2025, Southwest Arkansas, Southeast Oklahoma, East Texas, and Northern Louisiana experienced 35 tornadoes, along with numerous incidents of large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding. With the most active period of severe weather fast approaching, the National Weather Service office in Shreveport is urging residents to take proactive steps now to ensure they are ready when storms develop.

Throughout the week, Southwest Arkansas Radio will air daily news stories highlighting key safety topics:

  • Monday, March 2: Developing a severe weather safety plan to ensure everyone in your household knows what to do before storms threaten the area.
  • Tuesday: Understanding the dangers of flash flooding and reviewing lightning safety guidelines.
  • Wednesday: Identifying safe shelter locations and reviewing tornado safety procedures.
  • Thursday: Focusing on severe thunderstorms, including the risks posed by large hail and damaging winds, and explaining the critical differences between a watch and a warning.
  • Friday: Reviewing mobile home safety and the importance of having a secure shelter option.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed, review emergency plans, and remain weather aware throughout the spring season.
