South Pike County School Board Holds Regular Monthly Meeting

The South Pike County School Board convened for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, December 9th, with several key decisions made.

The board appointed Wes Campbell to fill the vacant position for Zone 6 with a motion from Robert Silva, seconded by Cory Ballard, passing 6-0. Additionally, the board accepted the resignation of Brad Chesshir, effective December 20, 2024, following a motion from Alyssa Duggan and a second from Barbie Baxter, which also passed 6-0.

Superintendent Tanya Wilcher provided an update on the ongoing construction of the baseball and softball complex, noting that Sod installation is expected to begin this week. Wilcher reminded the board that semester exams will take place on December 19th and 20th, with an early dismissal at 12:40 PM on December 20th for the Christmas holiday. School will resume on January 7th, with teachers returning on January 6th for professional development.

Cheyana Burns, presenting on behalf of the high school, highlighted several exciting initiatives, including the junior ring ceremony, robotics class projects, a Shakespeare play field trip, and the winning of a quiz bowl competition by the 7th-grade students. Elementary school principal James Riley reported on the successful ATLAS interim exams and the positive behavior program at Murfreesboro Elementary School. Riley also previewed several upcoming Christmas events, including caroling at a local nursing home, the Jingle Bell Ball, and the MES Christmas program.

In other business, the board approved updates to the School Choice Board policy, as well as a $300 Christmas bonus for all district employees.

The next meeting of the South Pike County School Board will be held on January 20, 2025, at 6:00 PM.
