South Pike County School Board Reviews Contracts, Reports, and Upcoming Events at January Meeting
The South Pike County School District held their regular monthly meeting on Monday, January 20th, where key decisions were made, and updates were shared regarding school operations, projects, and upcoming events.
One of the major items discussed during the meeting was the extension of Superintendent Tanya Wilcher’s contract. A motion to extend her contract through the 2027-2028 school year was made by board member Barbie Baxter and seconded by Robert Silva. The motion passed unanimously with a 7-0 vote.
Superintendent Wilcher presented her report, which included an update on the ongoing construction of the district’s baseball/softball complex. While weather conditions have posed some challenges, Wilcher remains optimistic that the project will stay on track and be ready for play in March.
The meeting also covered the start of the legislative session, with Alyssa Duggan serving as the board liaison. Wilcher assured that she would provide updates as more information becomes available from the session.
Wilcher also took a moment to update the board on the meeting she attended last week, highlighting some of the key items that were discussed.
Although Murfreesboro Elementary Principal James Riley was unable to attend the meeting in person, he submitted a video report on academic progress at MES. Riley provided a breakdown of room behaviors and the use of positive behavior points in the classroom. He also discussed the district’s goal of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into teaching practices, highlighting how teachers are incorporating this technology.
Riley further shared that state testing dates have been set for April.
Additionally, Wilcher presented the 2024 School Board Member Training Report. All members have completed the required six hours of training, except for Wes Campbell, who is not required to complete the hours unless he is elected to the position.
Looking ahead, the board decided to reschedule next month’s meeting to Monday, February 24th at 6:00 PM.
The meeting concluded after these discussions, with the board continuing to focus on the district’s progress and future plans.
