Nashville City Council Discusses Potential Hotel Development, Sales Tax Decline, and Building Demolition

During Tuesday’s Nashville City Council meeting, Mayor Larry Dunaway announced that a hotel chain has expressed interest in building a hotel within the city limits.

Dunaway said the city, in partnership with Developing Howard County, plans to commission a feasibility study to determine whether Nashville could support a 54-room hotel.

The cost of the study is expected to range between $7,500 and $15,000, depending on its scope and findings.

In other business, Nashville Finance Director Kimberly Green reported a decline in local sales tax revenue. City collections were down 3 percent compared to April 2024, while Howard County saw a 4.8 percent drop.

Code Enforcement Officer David Riggs provided an update on the long-vacant Sunset Grocery building, located at the corner of Sunset Street and Fourth Street. He reported that he had spoken with the property owner, who has agreed to demolish the structure and clear the site.

Mayor Dunaway noted that both the roof and the floor of the building had collapsed.

Finally, the council voted to reschedule its June meeting. It will now be held on Monday, June 30 at 12:00 p.m. in the city council chambers.
