Local Families Honored in 78th Annual Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program
The 78th Annual Arkansas Farm Family of the Year program has once again spotlighted the hard work and dedication of agricultural families across the state. Among those honored, two local families are celebrating top district awards.

Representing Howard County, the Smith family of Dierks has been named the West Central District Farm Family of the Year. Jared and Cathren Smith, who have been farming for 17 years, operate a cattle and poultry farm spanning nearly 250 acres. Their children, Cooper and Clara, are also involved, continuing a proud family tradition in agriculture.
Over in Little River County, the Lockeby family of Ashdown earned the title of Southwest District Farm Family of the Year. Shane and Kim Lockeby, along with their adult children and spouses, manage a diverse operation that includes poultry, hay, and a growing pecan business on more than 600 acres.
KMTB and KNAS spoke with Jared and Cathren Smith about what this recognition means to them. Cathren shared how deeply meaningful it is to represent a community she’s always called home.
The couple also touched on some of the challenges that come with a life in agriculture.
Despite the hurdles, they say there’s much to love about farming.
Cathren emphasized the importance of passing down values such as hard work, responsibility, and faith to their children through the farming lifestyle.
Jared offered a word of advice for those considering a start in agriculture.
The Smiths’ dedication to farming, family, and their community is what helped earn them this year’s West Central District title.
**Coming up later this week, we’ll introduce you to Shane and Kim Lockeby of Little River County, recently named the Southwest District Farm Family of the Year.
