Altercation During Local Arrest

A Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in an altercation Thursday night while attempting to make an arrest.

Chief Deputy John Eric Glidewell said the sheriff’s department and Mineral Springs police attempted to arrest 30 year old Timothy Leon Spencer on warrants for drug delivery. During the incident, authorities said Spencer struck Deputy Garner several times. As authorities were attempting to detain Spencer, a crowd estimated at 40 people gathered at the scene. At least one call was made to the county’s 911 dispatch reporting shots being fired at the officers. However, due the chaos around them, officers say are unsure if any shots were fired. A sheriff’s department patrol was also damaged during the ordeal.

Deputy Garner and Spencer both went to Howard Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Spencer was transported to jail after being released from the hospital.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation.
