Center Point Native hosted Poetry Night in honor of Langston Hughes

Last month, Center Point Native and Harvard University Graduate, Professor William Maxwell hosted poetry night in Center Point.

Maxwell said that poetry is the lifeblood of civilization and he also gave factual details of how poetry plays a major part in education along with how it is one of the foundations in culture.

Maxwell also talked about how he earned his doctorate from Harvard and the tasks that he had to do in order to receive his degree.

Maxwell mentioned a one particular moment that took place during his time in Harvard in 1964 and how his class was addressed by one of Harvard’s greatest scientists, Anne Roe and how that moment changed his perspective.

Maxwell stated that this event was done to honor and commemorate the anniversary of the death of one of America’s most notable poets, Langston Hughes who was also a novelist, playwright, social activist, and a leader of the Harlem Renaissance.
