Changes on the Horizon: Park Commission Announces Resignations, New Appointments, and Upcoming Baseball Season Plans

Park Director Megan Floyd informed the commission that Commissioner Donny Woods had submitted his resignation from the board. Woods stated in a letter to the Commission that he had served as a park commissioner since 2011. He explained he was asked to fill his brother, Ronny Woods remaining term following Ronny’s death in August of 2011. Woods was appointed by Nashville Mayor Billy Ray Jones and approved by the Nashville City Council. Woods retired in December of 2024 and had decided to retire from a number of boards and commissions that he has been serving on for the past several years.

Commissioner Freddie Horne also announced that he will be moving to emeritus status in March of 2025. Nashville Junior High Principal, Hannah Topor has been asked to take Horne’s position on the commission. The Nashville City Council is expected to appoint her during their February meeting on Monday, February 24th.

Floyd stated about 216 children signed up for baseball this year, which is about 25 less than last year. She said the drafts have been held and the park staff is working on schedules. She said the baseball season will start March 10th and they will host the jamboree on March 8th. Floyd said they will be using double first bases on the 5U, 6U, 8U, and 10U fields for safety reason in hopes of decreasing the number of collisions. She said they have also purchased a new mound for the 10U field.

Floyd said the window replacement project is just about completed at the Legion Hut on South Dodson Street and park employees will be laying linoleum on the floor within the next couple of weeks. She said they will be able to rent the Legion Hut when the work is completed.

Floyd said to rent the Legion Hut, you will need to contact to park office. The cost is a $200 rental and a $100 refundable deposit. The deposit will be returned if the building is left clean and not damaged.

Floyd also informed the commission that she had visited with Mrs. Keaster and they discussed a bench in Bobby Keaster’s honor and possibly covering the batting cages and naming it after him.
