CONSUMER ALERT: Arkansans to Receive Settlement Checks from Intuit/TurboTax

37,343 Arkansans will share $1.14 million in settlement

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin announced on Wednesday May 10th that Arkansas consumers misled by TurboTax’s owner Intuit into paying for “free” tax services will begin receiving checks via mail through May 2023.

Some 37,343 Arkansans will share in Arkansas’s $1,135,660 portion of the settlement announced in May 2022. All told, Intuit/Turbo Tax will distribute $141 million to 4.4 million Americans in a multistate agreement with all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

“It is gratifying to see Arkansans be made whole through this settlement after being misled into paying for a free service. I encourage anyone who has questions about this settlement payment to contact my office,” Griffin said.

During the filing periods for tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018, Intuit offered “free” TurboTax services that turned out not to be free to most customers, who needed to upgrade to a paid version of the software to complete their filing under certain conditions.

Qualifying Arkansans who were TurboTax customers during this time period will receive their refunds automatically. The amount a customer receives is determined by whether the customer used the TurboTax product for one, two or three years. The dates established for the mailing of checks to eligible consumers are April 24 through May 10.

To ensure that you are receiving a legitimate check, Griffin offers these tips:

  • The upper left-hand corner of the letter, which appears through a window in the envelope, shows that the letter is from Attorney General Tim Griffin.
  • The next line in the letter states that it is from the Intuit Multistate Settlement Administrator.
  • The letter itself bears the Attorney General’s seal.

Arkansans who wish to report concerns about the subject of this Consumer Alert or desire more information should contact the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office by calling (800) 482-8982 or by visiting www.arkansasag.gov.
