Governor Sanders Signs SB59 and Cell Phone Ban Bill to Support Arkansas Students and Schools

On Thursday, February 20th, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed SB59 into law, guaranteeing free breakfast for all public school students in Arkansas before the school day begins. This legislation, which passed the House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, aims to provide every student with access to nutritious food, regardless of their eligibility for free or reduced meals under federal guidelines.

Alongside SB59, Governor Sanders also signed into law a bill aimed at reducing distractions in Arkansas classrooms. The bill bans cell phone use during instructional hours in public schools, helping create a more focused and conducive learning environment for students. The bill is designed to minimize disruptions caused by cell phones, which many educators have cited as a significant hindrance to students’ academic performance.

Governor Sanders also discussed the broader impact of these programs, noting that hunger and mental health concerns affect every community and district in Arkansas.

Governor Sanders expressed her strong belief in the importance of both bills, stating that they align with her administration’s goals to ensure students have the best opportunity to succeed academically.

Governor Sanders previously announced the continuation of Arkansas’ Summer EBT program, which served nearly a quarter of a million children last summer. She also signed legislation providing free school lunches for students who previously qualified for reduced-price meals, further supporting Arkansas children in need.

These measures, alongside the ongoing Summer EBT program, which served nearly a quarter of a million children last summer, reflect the state’s commitment to supporting Arkansas students both inside and outside the classroom.
