Nashville Scrappers Baseball Coach speaks at Rotary Meeting

Nashville baseball coach Zac Stewart was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the Nashville Rotary Club.

Stewart said he has over 30 players on this year’s team with five seniors, five juniors, 13 sophomores and 9 freshman. Coach Stewart said the standards are really high for this team.

He said this team’s trademark will be full effort.

The Scrappers opened the season 1 and 0 after defeating the Mena Bearcats 13 to 3 on Monday night.

The Scrappers will host the 20th Annual Ralph Gross Memorial Tournament starting today at 1 with a game between Magnolia and Redwater. That game will be followed by Mayflower and Prairie Grove at 3:30 and Nashville will play Genoa Central at 6.

The proceeds from the Ralph Gross Tournament supports the Ralph Gross Athletic Scholarship Fund. Each year, a scholarship is presented to a student-athlete who plans to go to college and play sports. This year’s tournament will feature 3 conference champs and last year’s champion, the Magnolia Panthers.

The Scrappers will open conference play next week and then play in the Mt Pleasant tournament.

The Nashville Scrappers are the defending 7-4A conference champs and had a 19 and 8 record. They lost in the first round of the 4A state tournament to Brookland.Stewart said the 7-4A conference has five or six teams that could make it to this year’s state tournament including Ashdown, Magnolia, De Queen and Camden Fairview.

This year’s regional tournament will be played in Nashville and the state tournament will be hosted by Gravette.
