School safety top concern for Nashville School District administration
School safety is the top concern of the administration for the Nashville School District. With the start of school now only weeks away, the topic was discussed at Monday’s school board meeting. Outgoing Assistant Superintendent Joe Kell said there have been 27 school shootings that have taken place since January 1st. State officials currently have a list of 18 recommendations for districts to follow regarding school safety. The Nashville district currently follows eight of those guidelines. Superintendent Doug Graham says there are some on that list that just aren’t feasible for the Nashville district to follow. Some of the safety measures currently in place at the local district include remote door locks, a visitor management system, and video surveillance. Graham also noted the district has a resource officer & would like to work with Nashville city officials on hiring a second resource officer. The superintendent say he plans to have a meeting shortly with Police Chief Amy Marion & Howard County Sheriff Bryan McJunkins to discuss the student safety matter.
Graham also mentioned the district might even want to consider allowing on campus personnel to carry a weapon at some point in the future.
