Sevier County Man to Stand Trial for Police Officer Shooting and Multi-County Pursuit
A Sevier County man is scheduled for trial later this month in connection with a violent incident that left a De Queen police officer wounded and prompted a multi-county pursuit.
Kenneth Lee Smith, 37, is set to appear for a pre-trial hearing tomorrow in Sevier County Circuit Court. His jury trial is scheduled for December 16-19. Smith has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which include aggravated residential burglary, first-degree battery, and four counts of attempted murder. These charges stem from a July 2023 incident at a home on 113 Sweet Home Lane near De Queen. Additionally, Smith faces attempted capital murder for allegedly shooting and wounding De Queen Police Department Lieutenant Chad Bradshaw during the subsequent law enforcement pursuit.
Smith could face a prison sentence of up to 40 years or life if convicted on the charges.
The charges against Smith arise from a violent encounter that began after a domestic disturbance was reported at the residence on Sweet Home Lane. When a responding Sevier County deputy arrived at the scene, he was met with gunfire, and several rounds struck his patrol unit. Smith reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading officers on a high-speed chase across multiple counties.
As the pursuit continued, Smith allegedly fired at officers. During the chase, a bullet struck Lt. Bradshaw, who managed to continue the pursuit for a time before seeking medical attention. Fortunately, Bradshaw made a full recovery from his injuries.
Smith was located several hours later in Little River County with the help of a coordinated search effort involving dog and horse teams, drones, and an Arkansas State Police helicopter. The manhunt ended without further incident when Smith was apprehended.
Smith remains in the Sevier County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond while awaiting his trial.
