South Pike County School Board

Further news from the South Pike County School Board that took place this week. On the agenda was the discussion of the school calendar for next year. While nothing was decided Sullivan stated he wanted to discuss the options available such as a 4 day school week and an extended school day by 25 minutes. The extended day would allow flexibility throughout the year as well as allow for the school year to end up to 10 days earlier if adopted. Ultimately Sullivan stated, “It truly comes down to what is best for the kids. We lost ground due to COVID and we’re finally getting back into place. I’d like to see what the data shows concerning our options”.

Other concerns were brought up such as how younger children would handle extended days as well as what it could possibly mean for kids who often found themselves eating a single meal a day during the week. That which is provided by the school.

Last, on the agenda was an expulsion hearing for 2 students. As per the district’s request the students will not be identified. This meeting was closed to the public, we were however informed that the reason for the expulsion hearing for the 2 was due to multiple recurring suspensions. Board policy 4.31 was the policy the board followed to take action last night as the board voted unanimously for the suspension of the 2 students for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.
