Two officers receive minor injuries detaining suspect

Two Nashville police officers received treatment for minor injuries during an incident early Monday. Police Chief Amy Marion said officers Mackenzie Vermillion and David Shelby were sitting in a parking lot across the street from the Budget Inn motel on North Mine Street around 12:40 a.m., when they witnessed a male assaulting a female. The officers responded and said during the incident, the male, who was identified as 37 year old Torrico Hawthorne, hit the female, knocking her back into the room. As officers intervened, Chief Marion said Hawthorne began punching and biting both officers. With the assistance of officer Dustin Wakefield, police were able to detain Hawthorne. He was transported to the Howard County Jail. Officers Shelby and Vermillion both sustained injuries during the arrest, They were treated at Howard Memorial Hospital, and later released.
Hawthorne’s charges include 3rd Degree Domestic Battery, Aggravated Assault on a law enforcement officer and 2nd Degree Battery.
