Dierks City Council Meets For July Session

The city of Dierks and the town’s school district are trying to reach an agreement on funding for a school resource officer.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, aldermen determined the school should provide an hourly rate increase and pay for nine months of the officers insurance. The remaining three months would be paid by the city. When school is not in session, the officer would be working as needed for the city. The city will also be looking to hire someone for the position, preferably an already certified officer. Hiring someone who isn’t certified would cause that individual to have to attend the 14 week training academy, interfering with the school year.

In other business, the council plans to begin sending letters to residents who have unsightly property. The letters will ask the owner to clean up or mow the property.

City officials are also working to collect past due water bills and will begin looking to revamp the ordinance that sets when past due bills will have the water disconnected and what the re-connection fee will be.

An internet company from Hope has approached the city regarding use of the town’s water towers as antenna locations to distribute high speed internet to Dierks area citizens. The city of Nashville has already given approval for the project while the Mineral Springs city council rejected the proposal last week.
