Howard Memorial Hospital Board Approves Key Capital Purchases

During the October meeting on Tuesday night, the Board of Directors for Howard Memorial Hospital approved several significant capital budget requests aimed at enhancing patient care and operational efficiency.

Dr. Charles Caldwell presented a proposal for the purchase of an In Body scale, a sophisticated device that measures not only weight but also body composition, including body fat and lean mass, through a technique known as bioelectrical impedance analysis. Dr. Caldwell noted that his office would charge $39 for this service, which is not covered by insurance. He highlighted that patients currently travel to Texarkana for similar services, often paying up to $100 per visit. The board approved the purchase of the In Body scale for a total cost of $10,295.

In addition to the scale, board members approved the acquisition of a walk-a-way microbiology machine and incubator for the lab department at a cost of $77,950. A Mindray System, designed to enhance services across the surgery, Emergency Room, and Patient Care Unit for the IT department, was also approved at a cost of $297,000. Chief Financial Officer Bill Craig assured the board that all expenses would be covered under the hospital’s capital improvement budget.

CEO Stacy Harberson provided updates on various initiatives in her report. She announced her upcoming graduation in Atlanta and mentioned that new chairs for the Emergency Department waiting area have been ordered, with delivery expected next month. Additionally, signage in the waiting room is being refreshed to improve patient experience.

Harberson emphasized the hospital’s commitment to supply management, stating that they are closely monitoring inventory and collaborating with pharmacy staff, central supply, hospitalists, surgeons, and emergency department physicians to optimize resources.

Furthermore, she reported that Sam Best from Cadence Insurance conducted a risk analysis to identify any employee safety concerns within the hospital. After touring the facility, Best will submit a report addressing any identified issues for future action.

In a noteworthy recognition, Harberson shared that she was recently included in Becker’s Healthcare list of phenomenal leaders, a testament to her contributions and leadership at Howard Memorial Hospital.
