Mineral Springs City Council

The Mineral Springs City Council met Monday evening with a number of items being discussed. 1st on the agenda was the need for the city of Mineral Springs to go through the redistricting process. Currently the city is divided into 3 wards. As per the most recent population data the city of Mineral Springs has seen a decline in population now marking 1,085 people. In order for the 3 wards to meet redistricting compliance each board must be within 10% of the others regarding population. With the goal here to have equal representation across all wards. Multiple council members voiced their preference to return the city to a 2 ward state rather than 3. Mayor Vera Marks said she didn’t oppose the idea and that the city has had these 3 wards since 2016. No action was taken on this matter.

Progressing along the board voted with 4 in favor and 1 against to head into the 2022 year without the “Hearings & Petitions” section of the city council agenda. This section, in the past, has allowed city residents an opportunity to openly speak in council meetings for a specific allotment of time. After a year full of unproductive conversation in this slot; Mayor Marks presented the protocol for residents to reach out to their ward representatives, who in turn, would bring any issues to the council meetings.

And last, the city approved the purchase of a 20ft heavy duty trailer to be used to haul city equipment for a total price of $1,200. The recommendation came from water superintendent, Eric Marks, who vouched for the state the trailer was in despite coming at such a cheap price. This purchase was approved with 4 in favor and 1 against.
