South Pike County School District Board Meeting Highlights Resignations, Field Upgrades, and Grants
Tuesday, the South Pike County School District Board met for their regular monthly session, where several key updates and decisions were made.
The meeting began with the announcement of resignation from board member Matt Henderson. The board voted unanimously to accept his resignation, with a brief acknowledgment of his service to the district.
Superintendent Tanya Wilcher provided an update on improvements to the district’s athletic facilities. She revealed that she met with Weyerhaeuser last week to discuss enhancements to the baseball and softball fields. The district also secured a generous donation from First State Bank, which agreed to purchase both new scoreboards for the fields at a total cost of $70,000.
In addition to the field upgrades, Wilcher informed the board that tickets for upcoming playoff games will be priced at $8 and will only be available for purchase online. She also reminded the board that there would be a Board Training session held next Tuesday via Zoom, to help members stay informed on best practices and governance.
Another highlight of the meeting was the announcement of a significant grant award. The South Pike County School District has been awarded a $79,914 grant for High Impact Tutoring, which will provide additional academic support for students in need.
The meeting also touched on the success of the recent Fun Run event hosted by Murfreesboro Elementary School (MES). Over $10,000 was raised during the event, which will go toward various school programs and resources. Additionally, MES was able to recruit two new grandparents to join the school’s Grandparent Program, further strengthening community involvement.
In the final portion of the meeting, Superintendent Wilcher presented several recommendations for the board’s approval, including the adoption of a new speech therapy service from Presence. The company provides specialized therapy resources on an as-needed basis, helping to support students’ needs and ensure services are in place to finish out the school year along with hiring tutors using the High Impact Tutoring Grant. The board approved a motion to accept Superintendent Wilcher’s recommendations as presented.
