Former Nashville Police Chief Larry Yates passed away

Local law enforcement personnel are among those mourning the loss this week of former Nashville Police Chief Larry Yates, who passed away Tuesday afternoon. Current Police Chief Amy Marion is thankful that Yates took a chance in naming her to be the department’s first female patrol officer:

Yates’ law enforcement service began when served as a military police officer . He was hired in March of 1976 by the Nashville Police Department, climbing to the rank of Assistant Chief, before leaving at the end of 1996. Yates then served about 2 and a half years as Chief Deputy for the Howard County Sheriff’s Department, leaving that position to be named Nashville’s police chief. He served in that position until his retirement in July 2008.
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Center Point Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 pm. at Latimer Funeral Home in Nashville.
Yates was 70 years old.
