Dierks Suffers Flooding for the Second Year in a Row

For a second consecutive year, a major overnight rainfall event brought significant flooding to parts of southwest Arkansas. Like July of last year, the heaviest rainfall amounts Wednesday morning occurred in the Dierks area. However, yesterday’s flooding was not as catastrophic as the flooding of a year ago. Mayor Ronnie Cogburn said firemen used the department’s trucks to pump water from the electric sub station. The mayor said about 30 head of cows were missing as a result of the flood. U.S. Highway 278 was reduced to one lane traffic near Holly Creek, and a few residents living near the creek were moved from their residences.
Weyerhaeuser and other businesses within the city of Dierks did not suffer the amount of damage yesterday as was seen in July of last year.
The National Weather Service said widespread rainfall total of six to ten inches was noted across Howard County, with a few spots in the Dierks to Newhope corridor receiving as much as a foot of rain.
