All have the ability to heavily disrupt life as we know it but planning ahead can often times make the time more comfortable. The Howard County Extension office is recommending these tips to prepare for any kind of severe weather.

  1. Have a plan. Put together an emergency plan and keep family and neighbors informed of what that plan is.
  2. Have an emergency kit. From extra batteries, a radio, to water and medications. Know what you’ll need most in a time of need and have it ready.
  3. Check your insurance policy. That’s right. It’s important to review and know what coverage looks like for you because when disaster strikes you’ll want to know its available.
  4. If you find yourself without power in the winter months make sure your alternative heat source is actually safe for use indoors. No grills inside please.
  5. An last – If you venture out during or after severe weather make sure friends and family know where you’re going and what route you’ll take.
