Lockesburg resident charged with attempted murder in South Carolina

Charges have been filed against a Lockesburg resident who attempted to crash his vehicle through the gates of a South Carolina nuclear power plant in November of 2023.

According to court records, 66-year-old Doyle Wayne Whisenhunt was charged with attempted murder, leaving the scene of a traffic accident, malicious injury to property, trespassing and possession of methamphetamine for the incident that occurred in Oconee County, South Carolina on November 2, 2023.

Whisenhunt allegedly tried to crash his vehicle through a gate at the Oconee Nuclear Station around 8 pm and then drove towards a group of security guards.

Whisenhunt fled the scene but was later located at a nearby vacant home. He was reportedly found on the property by the property owner who held Whisenhunt at gunpoint until deputies arrived to make the arrest. He is currently being held in the Oconee County Jail on a $320,500 bond.

Whisenhunt could face up to 66 years in prison.

Whisenhunt is also wanted in Sevier County on multiple felony firearm and drug-related offenses, including possession of a controlled substance with the purpose to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, two-counts of simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms and maintaining a drug premise.
